Nearly twenty sailors, racing Optimists, Lasers and RSFevas, competed in the BVI Dinghy Championships, hosted May 17 to 19 in Tortola by the Royal BVI Yacht Club. In the end, it was the Club itself that was a winner. Janet Oliver, executive director of the Charter Yacht Society of the BVI, presented a check in the amount of US $1830 to help fund the Club’s Youth Sailing Program.
“We recognize the importance of giving as the Charter Yacht Society is a non-profit organization,” says Oliver. “Investing in youth sailors is a natural fit since many of our captains and chefs found their passion for the sea in similar program. But whether it is sailing or another discipline, there are life skills one learns which transcend the sport itself and those result in healthier, happier and better adjusted young people.”
The CYS represents the organized voice of individual BVI based charter yachts and their crews. The RBVIYC’s Youth Sailing Program, based at Nanny Cay Marina, is open to children of all ages and capabilities. www.crewedyachtsbvi.com, www.royalbviyc.org
